Ako Castle was completed in 1661 by order of Asano Naganao. The layout is based on Koshu-ryu military science, and the moats and stone walls are complex and twisting, making them unique in the country. The Asano clan came to an end when the third head of the clan, Asano Naganori, committed seppuku after a stabbing incident at Edo Castle. The clan changed lords until the Meiji era. Currently, the Otemon Gate and Honmaru Gate have been restored, and the former Ako Castle Gardens have been designated a national site of scenic beauty.
