This castle was built by Asano Tadayoshi, a senior vassal of Asano Nagaakira, the lord of the Kishu domain. After being built in 1600, it was abandoned once in 1615 due to the One Castle per Province Act, but was rebuilt three years later. After that, when Tokugawa Yorinobu entered the country as the lord of Kishu domain, his retainer Mizuno Shigenaka became the lord of the castle, and it continued to exist as the Mizuno clan's castle until the Meiji era. Currently, the area around the main castle ruins has been developed into Tankaku Castle Park, and is a place of relaxation.
