It is a huge castle with a circumference of about 3km and an inner perimeter of about 30km, and only the stone walls remain today. In 1585, Honda Toshihisa, a vassal of Toyotomi Hidenaga, became the lord of the castle, and the castle was built by incorporating flat castle techniques into a mountain castle. The difference in elevation from the foot of the mountain to the castle tower is 390m. It is the tallest of the three great mountain castles in Japan, and is truly worthy of being called "Japan's No. 1 mountain castle" in terms of size and height. It is one of the "Three Great Mountain Castles of Japan" along with Bitchu Matsuyama Castle and Mino Iwamura Castle.
