Toyotomi Hideyoshi built a castle in Fushimi as his retirement castle, but it collapsed in an earthquake (Fushimi Shizuki Castle). The later rebuilt Kowatayama Fushimi Castle was burned down in the Battle of Sekigahara. It was rebuilt again by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1602, and was the base of the early Tokugawa Shogunate, with the Shogun Proclamation Ceremony held there for three generations until Iemitsu, but it was abandoned in 1619 and the buildings were moved to Nijo Castle, Fukuyama Castle, Yodo Castle, etc.
