Akechi Mitsuhide built this castle on the shores of Lake Biwa in 1571. It is a water castle that drew in the waters of Lake Biwa, and it is said that people boarded boats from inside the castle to head to Azuchi Castle, where Oda Nobunaga was. After Mitsuhide killed Nobunaga at Honnoji Temple, he was defeated in the Battle of Yamazaki and Sakamoto Castle was burned down. It was later rebuilt by Niwa Nagahide, but was abandoned around 1586. There is only a stone monument of Sakamoto Castle on the lake shore, and no remains remain on the ground, so it was called a "phantom castle." However, in recent years, the stone walls of the main citadel have become visible due to the drop in the water level of Lake Biwa, and the stone walls of the Sannomaru citadel have been discovered during a survey of residential areas, drawing attention to the castle.
