Odani Castle

Odani Castle

Last update

This mountain castle was the residence of three generations of the Azai clan, who ruled over northern Omi. It was built around 1525. It is a famous castle that takes advantage of the topography of Mt. Odani, which is about 495m above sea level, and is counted among the "Five Great Mountain Castles of Japan" and the "Three Great Mountain Castles of the Middle Ages of Japan." Asai Nagamasa married Oichi, the younger sister of Oda Nobunaga, and was blessed with three daughters, Chacha, Hatsu, and Go, but the Azai clan was defeated in a battle with Oda Nobunaga and was destroyed. The castle was subsequently abandoned. Currently, the earthworks remain at the highest peak, Ozuku (495m), and the remains of the vassals' mansions remain in Shimizudani.s
