Ise Cotton Ise-no-Mon Hand Towel

Ise Cotton Ise-no-Mon Hand Towel

Last update

Ise Cotton, a traditional fabric with over 250 years of history since the Edo period, is known for its high-quality cotton that is carefully twisted and woven with starch. This hand towel is made using "Ise Katazome," a traditional dyeing technique that has been passed down for over 1,000 years, and "Chusen," a Japanese dyeing method. The towel is hand-dyed by artisans.

Over time, the starch washes off, and the more you use it, the softer and more comfortable the fabric becomes.

Shokkō Gogyō
The "Shokkō" pattern consists of continuous octagons and squares connected without gaps. This pattern, originating from the Shokkō brocade of Nara's Hōryū-ji temple, is renowned as one of the treasures of Nara. The design incorporates mythical creatures from the Kitora Tomb’s vibrant murals and the peony motif found in the Shōsō-in treasures, all expressed through Ise Katazome carving techniques.

Takarazukushi
The "Kisshō" pattern is a symbol of good fortune, with various treasures depicted to bring wealth and happiness. It is often used in auspicious gifts like ceremonial kimonos and belts. The design features elements like the jewel of wishes, treasure keys, the mallet of fortune, hidden cloaks, and other symbols of prosperity.
