After making history as the first foreign-born sumo wrestler to reach the rank of ozeki, Konishiki Yasokichi made it his mission to continue sharing the charm of sumo with the world, even after retirement from professional wrestling. Knowing that the coveted sumo matches are often elusive to international visitors, he produced Ochiizumi, a unique restaurant where anyone can experience sumo culture in unique ways: wearing a kimono, trying chanko nabe — a classic sumo dish prepared by real wrestlers — and experiencing the thrill of watching real rikishi engage in a fast-paced, exhilarating sumo bout.
Only one station from Kansai Airport in Osaka, a sumo world awaits at Ochiizumi. Upon arrival, you can change into a traditional kimono and have your photos taken before taking your seat to enjoy a delicious and traditional meal enjoyed by sumo wrestlers. Chanko nabe, also known as “sumo stew”, is a hearty hot pot dish packed with protein and vegetables and infused with umami from miso and soy sauce that wrestlers famously eat to meet their daily calorie count.
Enjoy unlimited refills of this deliciously comforting stew as you watch a sumo show, where two real sumo wrestlers will face each other in a thrilling bout. After the show, you can go to the ring, interact with the wrestlers and take photos together if you’d like.
Next, walk off your meal by walking around the food stalls. This unforgettable experience is great for family and friends and makes a great way to experience Japan’s cherished national sport, particularly if you are on your way to or from Kansai Airport.
