The origin of the Arima doll brush dates back to the Muromachi period. When you point the brush tip down to write, a tiny doll, about the size of a bean, peeps out from the other end of the brush, making it a cute and quirky writing tool. The beautiful patterns created by silk thread wound around bamboo sticks involve intricate craftsmanship. The brushes are also known as lucky charms to wish for fertility and safe childbirth. You will learn about the history and making of Arima doll brushes and the secrets of their mechanisms. Then you will make one at the Arima Toy Museum. Afterward, you can browse through the museum's collection of handcrafted mechanical dolls as well as around 4,000 other artifacts gathered from Japan and abroad.
