Donabe Gohan experience lunch: Cook home-grown Shigaraki koshihikari rice in a Shigaraki earthenware pot
Located in a renovated old house in Shigaraki, one of the six ancient kilns of Japan, Donabe Gohan & Cafe Mutsumian is a restaurant specializing in Shigaraki rice cooked in earthenware pots. The owner's family ran a pottery founded in the early Showa period, specializing in heat-resistant pottery. They also farmed on rice fields that had been passed down for generations. Koshihikari rice is grown right here in Shigaraki, cooked in an earthenware pot in front of you, and served with local ingredients. You will put the rice into the earthenware pot and heat it yourself, making this lunch a hands-on experience. While the rice is cooking, you can choose a Shigaraki-ware rice bowl and chopstick rest to use for your meal.
