Fukunishi Washi Honpo
Preserving a 1,300-year-old tradition, Fukunishi Washi Honpo makes washi paper using traditional techniques without compromise. Even today, every sheet of paper is hung to dry naturally. Made in the traditional way, Fukunishi Washi Honpo's hand-made "Uda Gami" paper is still used as an essential washi paper for restoring Japanese cultural assets (including Japanese artworks in museums and galleries in Japan and other countries). The paper is made from mulberry tree fibers mixed with white clay to form a pulp, which is spread and dried using a unique method. This produces strong, flexible paper that preserves well, which is why it has been used since ancient times as backing paper for mounting artworks. Today it is loved for its signature soft, supple texture and rich feel, and is increasingly used for arts and crafts, calligraphy, interior design and more. There may be less opportunities to use hand-made washi paper in daily life these days, but we believe it is our duty to pass on this tradition to future generations.
