Japan The Three Ancient Hot Springs! I walk Yuzaki seven hot water trace in Shirahama Springs with a storyteller.
Shirahama Onsen is one of Japan's 3 oldest hot spring resorts. Over 1,300 years ago, the Muro no Yu Hot Springs and Ki no Yu Hot Springs were mentioned in the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan). These were collective terms for the hot springs that occurred naturally in Yuzaki. This historic spa town was frequented by many members of the imperial court, including Empress Saimei, Empress Jito and Emperor Monmu. From the mid-19th to early 20th centuries, the 7 naturally occurring hot springs in Yuzaki came to be known as the "Yuzaki Shichito" (the seven hot springs of Yuzaki). While the Yuzaki Shichito of the past have dried up, Saki no Yu is at the same location and draws upon a nearby source for its onsen.
