Handmade ceramics-making class where you'll use real Shigaraki clay to make your own Shigaraki ware and pottery. You will shape 800 g of Shigaraki clay into your own cup, plate, bowl, vase, pen holder, or other work - one item per person. Using a manual pottery wheel, create the base and then take strips of clay to build up rings of clay to shape your product in this hands-on pottery-making activity. Novices welcome - a craftsperson experienced in Shigaraki ware will provide thorough guidance. You will have roughly an hour to mold a piece into your desired shape. We will take your piece into our care for the rest of the process. First it will be semidried to finish the bottom and then fully dried over the next three weeks before being fired in the kiln. There are two types of firing for you to choose between. One option is to use Japan's largest climbing kiln (wood-fired) to give the piece a natural burnt coloring. The other option is to apply a colored glaze and then fire in a gas kiln. These two options cost different amounts and take different amounts of time. The climbing kiln option will require six months at most, while the gas kiln option will require three months. For the finished piece, additional packing and shipping fees will be required on top of the original activity fee. The shipping fee will depend on the shipping location, quantity of pieces sent, and other factors.
