In Japanese cuisine, a sharp knife is prioritized in order to fully draw out the good qualities of the ingredients. Kameoka City in Kyoto Prefecture is one of Japan's largest sources of natural whetstones, and as such has long supported Japanese food culture by helping to keep knives sharpened. This museum exhibits special types of whetstones that were first created in Kameoka City, such as "Tamba Aoto" and "Awasedo," in addition to other precious natural whetstones from Japan and around the world. In the hands-on activity booth, the instructor will explain how to sharpen a knife with a natural whetstone. You can also discover a natural whetstone you like from among choices throughout Japan and create your own unique whetstone. Enjoy delicious dining with a sharp cutting knife!
