A Deep Dive into the Pearls of Mikimoto Pearl Island
Mikimoto Pearl Island is a lush island in Toba Bay. It was founded in 1893 by Kokichi Mikimoto, who succeeded in cultivating pearls for the first time in the world. The island has been open to the public since 1951 and has welcomed many visitors from Japan and abroad. On the island, which is about 2,310 square meters in size, you can visit the Pearl Museum, which explains everything about pearls, and watch demonstrations of ama (female divers) diving in their traditional white outfits. This tour offers a special experience where, in addition to a guided tour of the museum and an opportunity to experience pearl extraction from oysters not typically available to the public, you can also watch a special performance by the ama divers from the boat.
