Yamaken Mokkojo is the only company in Echizen Knife Village that specializes in manufacturing handles for Japanese knives.
You might not notice in your day-to-day, but a great deal of skill and technology goes into creating the handles for kitchen knives. The handle is the part that comes into direct contact with the hand. Focusing on the handle makes the knife itself easier to use.
The experience is led by the fourth generation Mr. Takuya Yamamoto and his wife Yuma Yamamoto, the maki-e artist.
Takuya will take us on a tour of Yamaken Wood Works factory, and then Yuma will show us how Yamato blades are made and teach us how to make handles.
Participants can add extra options to their experience as they want. Lacquer the handle material using a brush, then wipe the lacquer and add maki-e or color using a brush depending on your chosen experience. These experiences can be booked on the day if needed. (Purchases paid separately)
