Kinkori Shikkiten is a lacquering workshop run by a pair of brothers in Kawada. Receive direct instruction from the elder brother, Masataka Kinkori, and create a beautifully lacquered wooden tray. Mr. Kinkori still approaches lacquering with a playful heart, despite his age. He enjoys sharing his knowledge of lacquerware with every person who visits the area and is a patient teacher. No question is a stupid question to him, and your time at Kinkori Shikkiten will be filled with lively conversation. Mr. Toshiro Mori is responsible for the design of the ash tray used in this experience. The design is a combination of curved edges perfect for fingertips and proportional octagons that spread from corner to corner. Mr. Mori went through many designs to find the perfect one that would let guests create an item for daily use that is practical without being harsh. The form features perfectly balanced proportions even when mistakes are made. The edges of most octagonal trays are slanted or vertical, but the edges of this try curve slightly outwards. The shape is highly difficult to produce, but master carpenter Mr. Toku Inoue was able to bring it to life.
