Rosoku Matsuri (Candle Festival)
Experience a night in Okunoin engulfed in candlelight
UNESCO World Heritage Site Koyasan hosts a memorial of ten thousand lights in honor of the deceased; The Candle Festival. From Okunoin’s “Ichinohashi” spanning nearly 2km, the path leading up to Kobo Daishi Kukai’s mausoleum is decorated in the lights of thousands of candles for the sake of connecting with the souls of our ancestors.
Koyasan: Located in Northern Wakayama, sitting at an elevation of 800m, Koyasan is the home of the Shingon Esoteric sect of Buddhism founded by Kobo Daishi Kukai. It is here that visitors may spend a night in a Buddhist temple; an experience in authenticity unique only to Koyasan.
