A mystical Buddhist ritual with thousands of candles illuminating the temple precincts
This is an event, held at the Sai-no-kawara within the precincts of Nenbutsu-ji Temple, in which offerings are made by lighting candles at thousands of markers dedicated to abandoned souls. Candles are lit at 6 P.M., with the event continuing until 9 P.M.
Muenbotoke (abandoned souls): Here, muen indicates the deceased with nobody to mourn them or to make offerings to their souls.
