This inland bay was isolated from the Sea of Japan by the formation of the Shotenkyo Sandbar. While waters get rough in the Sea of Japan during winter, Kumihama Bay remains comparatively calm. Oyster farming is a major enterprise here. The sight of the farms, where oysters hang from rows of vertically submerged ropes, is one of the great cultural views of Kyoto Prefecture.
