Enshrined here is the patron deity of the 17 villages in Ikoma Valley. This old shrine is one of the most prominent in Japan which contains an altar (Mt. Ikoma itself) where the deity is enshrined inside a physical object, like at two other shrines in Nara Prefecture: Omiwa Shrine and Isonokami Shrine.
