The history of this district goes back some 400 years to the establishment of the Tokugawa Shogunate, following the decisive Battle of Sekigahara between rival samurai factions. In 1608,
the feudal lord Matsukura Shigemasa, who excelled at leading castle and town construction projects, had Gojo Shinmachi built outside the castle here. Architectural styles from different historical periods remain here today in this neighborhood that evolved as the town aged. It is one of the best places in Japan to view historical scenery.
