This venerable tree is approximately 1,000 years old. It is 26 meters tall with a trunk 16.72 meters thick and branches that form a crown stretching out 52 meters east to west and 42 meters north to south. The tree crown's width is fairly consistent in every direction, giving the plant a striking quality of perfection. Its grandeur and beauty is said to be the greatest in Japan. The Japanese government designated the camphor tree a special natural monument on July 19, 1946.
