It is said that the famous Buddhist monk Gyoki made the spring water well up here in 743 to cure a plague. At one time, Kitsu was the only naturally hot "onsen" in Kyoto Prefecture. It is classified as a simple hot spring that is hypotonic and mildly alkaline, with a temperature of 40˚C.
