Chionin Temple
Japan's greatest gate awaits you at the head temple of the Jodo sec
This huge temple sits in front of Mt. Kacho, one of the 36 peaks of the Higashiyama mountains. The temple is said to date back to 1175, when the high priest Honen built a thatched hut in the nearby Yoshimizu area. Interesting properties are the Mieido Hall, which has a capacity of 3,000 people, Sanmon, the largest main gate in Japan, the temple bell and many other structures.
