Niutsuhime Jinja Shrine
Situated among the rolling, serene rural countryside of Amano basin, likened by essayist Masako Shirasu to the Plain of High Heaven where deities reside, this shrine boasts more than 1,700 years of history. The deity of Mt. Koya is said to be capable of preventing all manner of calamity, and to have conferred the mountain upon Kobo Daishi, a famous Buddhist monk, and as such is worshipped far and wide. In 2004, the shrine was inscribed, along with Mt. Koya, Kumano and the Yoshino area, as a World Heritage site, namely the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.
