Sandanbeki Cave

Sandanbeki Cave

The Kumano Navy was known for its role in the Genpei War, a civil war that occurred in the 12th century. Legend has it that the force hid its vessels in this cave. Inside is a statue of Benzaiten, goddess of wisdom, one of the largest bronze statues in Japan. The cave extends for roughly 200 meters. Other sights within the cave include a replica guardhouse that is based on historical materials. Viewing the subterranean surroundings with the waves splashing about is an unreal experience.
