Taking 20 years to build, Hikone Castle was completed in 1622 and stands alongside Himeji Castle as one of Japan’s greatest. The castle looks even more beautiful when lit by moonlight. Before its construction, a statue of the goddess Kannon riding a golden tortoise stood at the top of Mt. Hikone. It is said that it is for this reason the castle is also known as Konkijo.
