Akashi Castle was built in 1619 by Ogasawara Tadamasa, the first lord of Akashi Domain, under the orders of Hidetada, the second Tokugawa Shogunate shogun.
The Tatsumi and Hitsujisaru turrets are precious three-story turrets, of which only 12 remain in Japan, and were designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan in 1957. In addition, moats and stone walls remain over a wide area, and the castle ruins (part of Akashi Park) were designated as a national historic site in 2004.
