Jikuwasan Ichijo-in Ryozen-ji Temple

Jikuwasan Ichijo-in Ryozen-ji Temple

Ryozen-ji Temple is the first location on the 88-temple pilgrimage of Shikoku, and it is said that people would pray here for the establishment and success of sacred places. The small, roughly 14-centimeter copper statue showing the birth of Buddha was created in the Hakuho period. In the past, the temple was one of the three great monasteries of the Awa region, and boasted a magnificent complex. In 1582, however, the temple buildings were burned down in battle by Chosokabe Motochika. It was later rebuilt by the lord of the Awa domain, Hachisuka Mitsutaka, but in 1891, it was again ravaged by fire, leaving only the main hall and the two-story pagoda. One hundred years of hard work has restored the temple to its former glory, but many of the buildings are modern structures. It is a special head temple that makes use of the lie of the land, and its unique arrangement offers a stunning landscape to pilgrims.
