Nanzen-ji Temple
[Head temple of the Rinzai school of Buddhism]
Nanzen-ji Temple was the first Zen temple in Japan to be built by order of the imperial family. It is superior even to the five great Rinzai temples of Kyoto and the five great Rinzai temples of Kamakura. It also stands at the top of all Zen temples in Japan. Famous for its cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, during spring and autumn, hordes of tourists flock to the temple. Among others, the Sanmon Gate, Hojo Garden, and Nanzen-in Temple can also be found inside the expansive temple grounds.
