In 1869, bangumi (school district) primary schools were established in Kyoto; they were the first schools in Japan to be administered by a school district system. Kyoto Municipal Museum of School History was opened in 1998 to collect, preserve, and exhibit documents and materials relating to bangumi primary schools, educational materials including textbooks, teaching materials and aids that were left by schools in Kyoto city, as well as many fine arts and crafts donated to schools by their former students and members of the public.
