This temple was founded in 759 by the high priest Jianzhen of the Tang dynasty. He was invited by Emperor Shomu to Japan, overcoming many hardships. The Kondo, or Golden Hall, is the largest existing example of Tempyo architecture, and there are shibi (ancient roof ornaments) called "Tempyo-no-iraka" on its roof. The precinct of the temple, including the Treasure House and other buildings, are vividly reminiscent of what the temple would have been like in the Tempyo period. The 10-year full restoration of the Kondo was completed in 2010.
