This rectangle-shaped tumulus was built in the early 7th century, and the horizontal stone chamber—which is made from around 30 giant rocks—is one of Japan’s largest. It is called Ishibutai, meaning ‟stone stage,” because the top of the ceiling stone, which has appeared through the loss of topsoil, is flat like a stage. Nearby is the Takamatsuzuka Tumulus, famous for its brilliant murals.
