Yakushiji Temple

Yakushiji Temple

[The Brilliant Hakuho Period (645-710)]
The temple grounds feature a unique layout called yakushijishiki garan haichi where the Kondo (main hall) and Kodo (lecture hall) are placed in the center between two three-story pagodas (the East Pagoda and West Pagoda). The contrast between the old East Pagoda and the red and green West Pagoda, reconstructed in the Showa Period (1926-1989), is strikingly beautiful. Three statues called the Yakushi Sanzon (the triad of Medicine Buddha) are the principle images of the temple and are among the most prominent works of Japanese Buddhist fine art.
