In 593, Empress Suiko issued an imperial decree that Omiwa no Kimishiratsutsumi enshrine Omononushi (the god of medicine, nation-building and magic) at Kango Shrine. Later, in 717, the powerful aristocrat Fujiwara no Fuhito also enshrined Onamuchi no Mikoto (one of the central gods of Japanese mythology) and Sukunahikona no Mikoto (the god of hot springs, agriculture, and knowledge).
