The Sumo Museum opened in May 1990 in Nara Prefecture, the birthplace of sumo wrestling, and is dedicated to the memory of the founding father of sumo wrestling, Taima no Kehaya. A full-size sumo ring is the museum's most popular attraction because, unlike a normal sumo ring where entry by spectators is forbidden, visitors are encouraged to enter this ring. The museum also holds about 12,000 documents related to sumo including books, ranking lists, and tournament records that are popular with sumo enthusiasts.
