Built in 645 during the Taika Reforms that further centralized Japan's imperial government, this is one of the oldest temples in the country. It also holds the prestigious position of special head temple of the Kegon sect of Todaiji Temple. The principal image is the Monju Bosatsu, the Buddhist deity of wisdom, and, at seven meters, is the largest statue produced by the famous sculptor Kaikei.
