The V-shaped canyon was formed by the sudden elevation of the accretionary prism and the downward erosion caused by the Kitayamagawa River. The accretionary prisms in this area is the oldest remaining in the Nanki Kumano Geopark. This river was used for transporting lumber to Shingu City. Today, the lumber is being transported by trucks, and tourists can have a rafting experience at the river.
