As Hideyoshi’s trusted younger brother, Hidenaga was both an intelligent strategist and a capable general. He played key roles in campaigns across Tajima and Harima (now Hyogo Prefecture) and resided in Wakayama-jo Castle (Wakayama) and Koriyama-jo Castle (Nara) as a daimyō overseeing one million koku.
This time, we will introduce two castles associated with Toyotomi Hidenaga.
Wakayama Castle is known as the castle of the Kishu Domain (Wakayama Prefecture), one of the Tokugawa Gosanke (three branches of the Tokugawa clan), but it was originally built by Toyotomi Hidenaga, Hideyoshi's younger brother by four years. Hidenaga accompanied Hideyoshi in many battles and supported his conquest of the country. When Hideyoshi pacified Kishu in 1585, he ordered Hidenaga to build a castle at the mouth of the Kino River. This was the starting point of Wakayama Castle, which continues to this day. There are no remains to recall the Hidenaga era, but the castle tower, which was destroyed by fire in war damage, has been faithfully rebuilt.

Toyotomi Hidenaga was awarded Koriyama Castle in 1585, when he was granted the Yamato Province (Nara Prefecture) in addition to his existing territories of Kii and Kawachi (Osaka Prefecture) in recognition of his achievement in forcing the surrender of Chosokabe Motochika, a warlord from Shikoku. The castle was originally built by Tsutsui Junkei, a feudal lord during the Warring States period, but Hidenaga is said to have further renovated it into a castle worthy of Yamato's 1 million koku fief. The magnificent stone walls remain to this day.
